All electrostatic powder coating means working with combustible and explosive powder - air mixtures.
The essential risks are an ignition within the spraying area, and the possibility of this reaching the enclosed powder collector.
Explosion capable mixtures can arise inside the enclosed collector during normal operation and this could lead to a catastrophic bursting of the system, and potentially a secondary explosion in the spray booth if an ignition reaches this area. This would result in serious damage to plant and persons in the area.
The ATEX Directive requires employers / users to prevent and protect against explosions from a powder coating plant. From July 1st 2003 all new installed and / or modified plants with automatic guns must comply with the Directive. From 30th June 2006 all existing plants must comply. Nordsons fire detection and suppression system continually monitors the powder booth spraying area with combined IR and UV detectors. If an iginition is sensed the spray guns and extraction unit are immediately shut down and an alarm is triggered. In addition to this, CO2 is instantaneously flooded in to the ductwork to block flames or burning embers entering the collector. This block prevents propagation of the flame to the enclosed collector by removing the 'fuel'.
